Where it is

Schaumberg is a soaring ridge in Austria's Mühlviertel, at about 454 m, that only really works in a narrow band of northeast-to-east wind. The northeast-facing edge needs 10–15 km/h to reliably support a wing, and the best days bring brisk 20–30 km/h northeasterlies, when pilots can soar for hours, cover up to 30 km ridge-running, and gain generous height. Any wind with a southerly component is poor here, and southeast wind is close to unflyable — it runs almost parallel to the ridge, making thermal releases very hard to catch, and once the direction swings past roughly 100° the lift band stops working reliably. Because the ridge depends on such a specific wind window, pilots are asked to avoid glide-out flights away from it when they can. Flying is also coordinated around a nearby sailplane airfield: paragliding generally happens on weekdays, since the sailplanes fly on weekends and from Friday afternoon on. Spring flying from April is limited too, since the wind that blows then is mostly the unfavourable southeast direction.

Getting there & local rules

Park only on the left side of the road, causing minimal damage to the verge — don't block the private driveway or drive further onto the property than necessary. Walk up along the edge of the meadow or field to reach launch.

Local rules & hazards

The northeast ridge only reliably supports flight in a narrow 10–15 km/h NE-to-E wind window — anything with a south component, and especially southeast wind, doesn't work here. Flying is coordinated around a nearby sailplane airfield, so paragliding generally happens on weekdays, since the sailplanes operate on weekends and from Friday afternoon onward. Top-landings are possible but expect lee-side turbulence, and pilots are asked to avoid glide-out flights away from the ridge where possible.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Schaumberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Schaumberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
