Where it is

Schwarzenbach is a ridge-flying site in Burgenland, Austria, launching from 464 m with a modest altitude difference to the valley floor that keeps it firmly outside beginner territory. The terrain itself isn't straightforward, and the site is explicitly not recommended for pilots without some flying experience already behind them. What makes it fly at all is thermal timing: on a good thermic day the modest height gain is enough to stay up and work the ridge, but on a quiet day there's a built-in safety net — a pilot who can't find a thermal connection can simply land back at the launch site instead of committing to a lower, unfamiliar landing. Before flying here for the first time, a terrain briefing from a local club member is required, which is worth treating as a real prerequisite rather than a formality given how much local knowledge the site rewards. Wind from the southeast or south suits the launch; the meadow takeoff sits northwest of the village.

Getting there & local rules

A terrain briefing from a local club member is required before flying here for the first time — treat it as mandatory, not optional, given how unforgiving the terrain can be for a first visit.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Schwarzenbach, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Schwarzenbach with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
