Where it is
Thurntaler Startplatz 3 is the lowest of the three main Thurntal launches above Sillian, in Austria's East Tyrol, at about 2,171 m, with a wide wind window running from southeast right around through south, southwest and west to northwest. It's part of the same mountain that's locally known for offering such a spread of heights, difficulty levels and launch directions in one place, all with the main Alpine ridge behind and the Dolomites ahead in view. A resident flying school in Sillian's town center welcomes visiting pilots trying the region and can guide anyone who wants local knowledge rather than exploring solo; the mountain flies through every season. Landing is at the large field on the valley floor, marked by a windsock on the flying school's hut — watch for strong valley wind and turbulence on the approach.
