Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

The Niesen is the Bernese Oberland's perfect pyramid, and its 2,254 m launch is a launchpad in the truest sense: an excellent departure point for cross-country flights running south-southwest along the ridge towards Frutigen and Adelboden. A funicular from Mühlenen — on the Bern–Spiez–Kandersteg line — carries you up, though capacity for gliders is limited on busy days. This is a site that rewards preparation: the launch winds can be deceptive, Swiss airspace demands homework, and the landing rules below are strict for a reason.

Launch & conditions

The take-off is rather steep but generously sized, working on southwesterly flow. The wind situation on launch can be tricky — take time to read it. In this part of the Alps, Föhn awareness is part of the pre-flight check.

Getting there & local rules

Ride the funicular from Mühlenen (local trains only; they also stop at Heustrich, next to the primary landing). The Heustrich landing sits within 5 km of the Rickenbach airfield, so special approach restrictions apply — and under no circumstances land at or overfly the airfield at any altitude, and never land between Heustrich and Frutigen: the site's continued existence depends on it. Check Swiss airspace and active danger areas before every flight.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Niesen – 2280, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Niesen – 2280 with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
