Where it is

winchFlatland XC

Flugplatz Saarmund sits about 20 km southwest of Berlin, Germany, right next to the Nuthetal motorway interchange and stretched out at the foot of the Saarmunder and Eichberg hills in a setting locals describe as genuinely scenic for a flatland airfield. It's a working tow site rather than a quiet backwater: launching from 60 m, it uses wind from either the east or the west depending on the day, which gives it two usable tow axes and keeps it flyable more often than a single-direction field. One practical thing to know before visiting as a guest is the pecking order — student pilots training here get towed ahead of guest pilots, so a drop-in visitor may find themselves waiting behind the day's lesson schedule. It's also worth setting expectations on altitude: the tow heights that are technically possible here aren't always what a pilot actually gets on a given flight, so this isn't the place to plan a long thermal session around a guaranteed release height.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Flugplatz Saarmund, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Flugplatz Saarmund with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
