Where it is

Jenner / Mitterkaser – Alm above Berchtesgaden is one of the most dramatic flying areas in the Northern Alps, with the flight path passing over the fjord-like Königssee and a full view of the Watzmann massif. It's also one of the most demanding and environmentally sensitive sites in the region, launching in west wind at around 1,770 m, so pilots are expected to study the current site rules before their first flight rather than wing it. The main landing field near the valley station turns turbulent in valley wind and thermic conditions, and a fall-season pasture fence needs watching near the landing; it's best attempted only in calmer conditions. Berchtesgaden runs a long-standing golden-eagle protection program, and its rules apply here, with information posted at the valley station. The site's southeast launch area is usable only once ski operations for the season have stopped, and passenger (tandem) training isn't allowed there; a separate ramp and water-basin launch area is reserved exclusively for hang gliders. Commercial tandem flying is explicitly forbidden by the landowner.

Launch & conditions

Getting there & local rules

Read the current site rules before your first flight here — this is one of the more demanding, environmentally sensitive areas in the region.

Local rules & hazards

The main landing field turns turbulent in valley wind and thermic conditions, and a pasture fence near the landing needs watching in autumn — fly it only in calmer conditions. Golden-eagle protection rules apply across the site, and commercial tandem flying is explicitly forbidden by the landowner.

Check conditions before you fly
