Where it is

Kampenwand Startplatz 2 sits above the Chiemgau Alps in Bavaria at roughly 1,360 m on the Hirschenstein side of the massif, a short walk below the cable car's upper station. It's a north-facing launch, working best from northwest through north with a touch of light northeast still flyable; local pilots read the big windsock on the neighboring Felsköpfl ridge and the flags at the Gorialm hut before committing, and steer clear of easterly wind, which sets up a lee rotor whenever the flow comes from south to west. Getting to the launch takes about ten minutes on foot, following the old ski-piste track down from the top station rather than a road. Landing is at the dedicated Kampenwand meadow below, flown as a left-hand pattern in the usual north wind or a right-hand pattern when the wind swings south. Because the slope sits inside a protected golden-eagle zone, flying pauses each spring during the birds' breeding season, and grazing cattle near the takeoff can close the site for the day.

Launch & conditions

Launch faces north; fly NW through N, with light NE still workable. Check the large windsock on the Felsköpfl ridge west of the launch and the flags at Gorialm before taking off, and avoid an easterly wind — south-to-west flow sets up a lee rotor here.

Getting there & local rules

About a 10-minute walk from the cable car's upper station, down the old ski-piste track to the launch.

Local rules & hazards

From 1 April to 15 June, flights below 1,500 m MSL must stay inside a marked corridor to protect nesting golden eagles, and grouse breeding areas need at least 200 m of clearance above ground year-round. South-to-west wind produces a lee rotor right at the launch, a known turbulence risk pilots are briefed on locally.
