Where it is
Messelberg is a soaring ridge in the Swabian Alb where experienced pilots fly cross-country when conditions allow, but the launch is trickier than it first looks — if the wind isn't blowing exactly from the west, pilots can expect heavy turbulence, and that turbulence often spreads across the whole slope when the wind comes more from the northwest, bringing real collapse risk for paragliders. Flying only happens under a club-appointed launch marshal, numbers in the air are capped, first-timers and guest pilots need an in-person briefing, and a working radio is mandatory. If more pilots are waiting than the site allows, flight time is limited to 30 minutes so everyone gets a turn. The rules exist because of the site's position under German aviation law, and past rule-breaking has led the operator to close the site entirely more than once — the local club keeps it open to guest pilots by asking everyone to respect the limits without exception.
Launch & conditions
Fly only when the wind is coming exactly from the west — any deviation, especially from the northwest, brings a real risk of heavy turbulence and canopy collapses across the slope.
Local rules & hazards
Flying is only permitted under a club-appointed launch marshal, with a hard cap on how many gliders can be airborne at once and a mandatory radio. Guest pilots need an in-person briefing before their first flight, and repeated rule violations have led to the site being closed entirely in the past.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Messelberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Messelberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
