Where it is
Nortmoor Nord is a winch-launch flatland site at almost sea level (about 2 m) in the Ostfriesland lowlands, flying strictly on south winds — the counterpart to the south-facing Nortmoor Süd strip nearby, which works the opposite wind. Because take-off and landing sit right beside working farmland and a locally important bird habitat, ground procedures are detailed: before towing starts, the crossing at the Mittelweg track is secured, typically with pylons, so farm vehicles and walkers notice the tow lines laid across it, and a route marshal covers any stretch of the tow line that isn't clearly visible from the winch. Warning signs go up on the Heidkoppelweg before flying begins, and the flight leader identifies usable emergency landing areas before anyone launches, in case a tow line breaks. Training flights only go ahead when the surrounding vegetation still leaves safe emergency-landing options open, and flying pauses immediately if people or vehicles approach on the Münkeweg, since farm traffic has priority. The ground south and east of the strip is meadow-bird and white stork habitat, to be cleared by at least 50 m and used for landing only in a genuine emergency.
Launch & conditions
A winch-launch site on flat coastal ground worked on south winds only, the counterpart to nearby Nortmoor Süd; warning signs and route marshals go up along the tow line before flying starts.
Local rules & hazards
The ground south and east of the site is meadow-bird and white stork habitat — pilots must clear it by at least 50 m, and it may be used for landing only in a genuine emergency. Farm traffic on the surrounding tracks has priority, and flying pauses immediately if people or vehicles approach. Training flights go ahead only when vegetation still leaves safe emergency-landing options nearby.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Nortmoor Nord, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Nortmoor Nord with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
