Where it is
Übungshang Sonnen is a German training slope at about 995 m, used for basic paraglider and hang-glider instruction on wind from north through north-east, east to north-west — flight operations only happen in coordination with the flying school. When students launch from the highest point of the slope, a working radio link between student and instructor is required. Training here also has to work around the neighbouring Hörnle flying site: its landing pattern borders the training slope to the north, so training operations pause briefly whenever Hörnle pilots are on final approach. Because the terrain slopes gently to the west, instructors need to correct students in good time to stop them drifting toward the buildings on that side. During training, access to the nearby campsite has to be kept clear and secured, and the small lift hut in the lower part of the landing area is either removed or padded with suitable material whenever training is underway.
Launch & conditions
Students launching from the highest point of the slope need a working radio link with their instructor.
Local rules & hazards
The neighbouring Hörnle flying site's landing pattern borders this slope to the north, so training pauses briefly when Hörnle pilots are on final approach. Because the terrain slopes gently west, students are corrected early to prevent drifting toward the buildings on that side, and the lift hut in the lower landing area is removed or padded during training.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Übungshang Sonnen, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Übungshang Sonnen with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
