Where it is
Vogtmaiers Kanzel sees less traffic than the neighboring sites around Oppenau, but it's well worth the visit — reach the launch on foot from the Alexanderschanze along a forest track, or park after the wind turbine and follow the ridge path for about 20 minutes. Training flights aren't permitted here, hang-glider pilots need an unrestricted licence, and the landing field is genuinely tricky — everyone is told to scout it before their first flight, since strong thermal conditions, especially in spring, can bring real turbulence there; less experienced pilots are advised to stick to the calmer morning and evening hours on those days. Flying only starts two hours after sunrise and stops an hour before sunset. In a north wind, expect lee-side rotor along the whole ridge line despite a clean launch wind, and southerly winds can turn just as turbulent thanks to the Black Forest's wave effects and foehn. Overflying the protected area below is only allowed above 300 m AGL in thermal conditions, with altitude enough to reliably reach the landing field beyond it.

Getting there & local rules
Reach the launch on foot from the Alexanderschanze via the forest track, or park after the wind turbine and walk the ridge path for about 20 minutes. No vehicles at the launch itself — park at the Oberer Rank forest car park. A day pass costs a small fee, sold locally before you fly.
Local rules & hazards
Overflying the protected area below the ridge is only allowed above 300 m AGL in thermal conditions, with enough height to reliably reach the landing field beyond it — carry an altimeter. The landing field itself turns turbulent in strong thermal conditions, especially in spring, so less experienced pilots should stick to calmer morning and evening flights on those days, and it should always be scouted before a first flight.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Vogtmaiers Kanzel, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Vogtmaiers Kanzel with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
