Where it is

Zopten is a north-to-east facing launch in the Thuringian Forest, and getting there properly matters as much as the flying does. Guest pilots park in the village of Gräfenthal rather than at the landing field itself — parking there is genuinely tight, and ignoring this is what gets the club into trouble with local authorities — then walk in on foot, while club members and the flying school drive up. Access to the launch itself, by vehicle, is restricted to members with special permission. Flying only happens within an approved seasonal window that shifts through the year: roughly 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter, stretching to 8 a.m.–7 p.m. across the long summer months of May through August. Read the on-site info boards before flying — they carry details specific to this location that are worth knowing before your first flight.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Zopten, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Zopten with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
