Where it is
Verel Pragondran launches from a cliff above Chambéry in the French Alps at 890 m, with a real technical trademark: strict airspace rules from a nearby airport mean no flying down in the valley — pilots must stay along the cliff line from takeoff to landing, capped at 1,000 m altitude, and drop to no more than 50 m over the ground (about 350 m ASL) once over the landing zone at Montagny. In the air, it only really works with northeast or east wind, when the upper cliff shelters the site and flying stays smooth; above roughly 1,300 m conditions can turn genuinely rough. A south wind makes takeoff essentially impossible unless it's very light with strong thermals to compensate, and it also makes the main landing at Montagny uncomfortable, sitting on the lee side of the Monts ridge — pilots typically choose the alternate landing at Brocolis instead when that happens. Getting to launch means driving toward Col de Saint-Saturnin, parking at the road's end to keep the village quiet, then a roughly 15-minute walk in on a signed trail.
Launch & conditions
Takeoff is directly off the cliff; be careful in a strong north wind. It's a site locals describe as the start of genuinely fantastic flights when conditions line up.
Getting there & local rules
From Chambéry, head via Sonnaz toward the Col de Saint-Saturnin; park at the end of the road to avoid disturbing the village, then walk in on the signed trail — about 15 minutes on foot.
Local rules & hazards
Strict airspace rules apply here because of a nearby airport: pilots must stay along the cliff from takeoff to landing at a maximum of 1,000 m altitude, dropping to no more than 50 m over the ground once over the Montagny landing. The site flies best in northeast or east wind, sheltered by the upper cliff, though conditions can turn rough above about 1,300 m. A south wind makes takeoff essentially impossible and can make the main landing uncomfortable — pilots usually switch to the alternate landing at Brocolis instead.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Verel pragondran, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Verel pragondran with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
