Where it is

Blorenge, above Abergavenny in Wales, is a serious ridge site that can host 30 or more gliders when conditions are good but shrinks to a handful as the wind builds — it's best known as a strong option for light-wind days and for triangle or out-and-return cross-country flying. There are three distinct launch points to choose between: a shallow southeast takeoff, a committed and sometimes turbulent northeast bowl that hang glider pilots should launch from right at the bowl's edge even in no wind, and a notably friendlier northwest launch. Vehicle access to takeoff is limited to permit holders, so most pilots face a long carry on foot. The hill is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, and every enclosed field on the mountain is strictly out of bounds, with dogs not permitted anywhere on site. It's an open site, flyable by any suitably insured visiting hang glider or paraglider pilot, but the mix of a committed bowl launch, real hazards below, and a foot-only approach means it rewards picking your launch point to match your experience and the day's conditions.

Launch & conditions

Three launch options: a shallow southeast takeoff, a committed northeast bowl that can turn turbulent (hang glider pilots should launch right at the bowl edge, even in nil wind), and a notably friendlier northwest takeoff. Vehicle access to launch is permit-holders only — everyone else faces a long carry on foot.

Getting there & local rules

Reached from Abergavenny via the B4269, or from Llanfoist or Blaenavon via the B4246. Park only in the designated car parks — not on roads, verges or passing places.

Local rules & hazards

Watch for high-voltage power lines in the valley below and rotor behind takeoff, especially near the northeast bowl. The whole hill is a Site of Special Scientific Interest — stay off all enclosed fields, and note dogs are not permitted anywhere on site.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Blorenge, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Blorenge with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
