Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Talybont is a Welsh ridge site in the Brecon Beacons, with several possible takeoffs depending on which way the wind is blowing (southwest, east, south, southeast or northwest) and how much energy you have for the walk up. Access starts by turning off the A40 north of Crickhowell and Bwlch toward Talybont village; at the T-junction, turn right past a couple of pubs and a small shop, then left up and over the canal's swing bridge. From there, follow the road roughly 8 km past the reservoir until it turns left over a bridge and climbs sharply — the car park at the top is on the right. If you're planning a cross-country flight, it's worth leaving a car down in the village beforehand, since getting back up to retrieve your own car afterward can be a real slog. The one hazard worth remembering: top-landing on the steep faces here, aside from the northwest takeoff, can generate rotor, so treat that approach with real caution.

Launch & conditions

Which takeoff you use depends on wind direction — southwest, east, south, southeast and northwest are all options — and how much energy you have for the walk up.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Talybont, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Talybont with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
