Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Skalafell is a high mountain flying site just outside Reykjavik, popular for its size and easy access. The main flying area sits in a broad bowl at the western end of a long ridge, with an unusually wide, smooth takeoff on top — there's room to set up without jostling for space. At 724m, it catches thermals and soaring conditions well, and pilots use it for both short local flights and cross-country attempts when the day allows. Its closeness to the city makes it one of the more convenient mountain sites in the area, and reaching the base is straightforward by road, though the final stretch up to launch can turn rough or become 4x4-only once winter sets in. Because Iceland's weather shifts fast, conditions that look flyable from the car park can change by the time you're on top, so treat any forecast as a starting point, not a guarantee, and check locally before committing.

Launch & conditions

Launch anywhere along the top, though most pilots set up above the southeast-facing ridge. In winter, when the resort's ski lifts are running, ask the lift operators for a ride up rather than driving the summit road, which can be closed to anything but heavy 4x4s.

Getting there & local rules

Drive from Reykjavik toward Thingvellir; about 10km along that road, a signed turnoff on the left leads to the Skalafell ski area car park. A rough track continues from near the car park entrance up to the antenna site on top.

Local rules & hazards

Skalafell sits beneath controlled airspace that starts only about 1,000 feet above takeoff, so if you fly over the surrounding mountains you must stay below 1,000 feet (roughly 305m) above any terrain higher than 2,000 feet — this restriction reaches about 20km east and 30km north of launch. Cloudbase here is often low and the summit, at around 800m, is exposed to upper-level wind, and Icelandic weather can turn quickly, so treat conditions as changeable even on a promising-looking day.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Skalafell, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Skalafell with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
