Where it is
Monterosso launches at 503 m above Italy's Cinque Terre coast, on the SP38 road just past the Soviore Sanctuary, and glides straight down toward beach landings at Monterosso, Levanto and nearby towns — all completely out of sight from takeoff. That's the site's signature catch: you don't know how crowded the beach is until you're already airborne and it comes into view, so check conditions before you commit rather than assume. It only really flies in southeast, south or southwest wind; a strong east wind puts takeoff downwind, which is a real hazard, though east and southeast winds do open up soaring along nearby Punta Mesco. Sea breeze and a good temperature gradient can build flyable thermals even in winter (in downwind conditions up to about 20 km/h), and spring brings strong enough thermals for some cross-country flying. Beach landings are officially forbidden from 1 May through 30 September, but in practice the beaches also fill up in October, May, over Easter, on weekends, and on Italy's 25 April national holiday — so timing a landing here takes more than checking the calendar.
Launch & conditions
Takeoff is on the SP38 road just past the Soviore Sanctuary, roughly 1 km beyond it on the right.
Getting there & local rules
Take the A12 motorway exit at Carrodano, head toward Monterosso, then on the SS370 before the town's descent turn onto the SP38, passing the Soviore Sanctuary to reach takeoff.
Local rules & hazards
Landing on the beaches is officially banned from 1 May to 30 September, but in practice they're also crowded in October, May, over Easter, on weekends and on Italy's 25 April holiday — check before you land, since the beach is completely out of view from takeoff. Fly only in southeast, south or southwest wind; a strong east wind puts takeoff downwind, though east and southeast winds do open soaring at nearby Punta Mesco.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monterosso, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Monterosso with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
