Where it is
Port Waikato, on New Zealand's west coast south of the Waikato River, is a coastal soaring site reached from Sunset Beach, with a track running south along the ridge through toitoi bush to reach the top launch areas. There are effectively two upper takeoff points along that track: an old, cliff-edge launch once used by hang gliders that isn't suitable for paragliders, and a better second option further along where the track opens onto a large, rounded hilltop. On stronger wind days, pilots can also launch from the sand dunes right in front of the cliffs near the car park and beach entrance, which gives an easier, lower-altitude alternative. The main local hazard is in the bowl south of the top takeoff: shifting wind direction can put either side of that bowl into rotor, so it needs active attention rather than a set-and-forget approach once airborne. The site sits just inside controlled airspace, with a hard ceiling of 2,500 feet, so altitude awareness matters here as much as reading the bowl.
Launch & conditions
Two upper launch points along the ridge track from Sunset Beach — an old cliff-edge hang-glider launch unsuitable for paragliders, and a better option further on at a large rounded hilltop; on strong days, the dunes near the car park offer a lower alternative.
Getting there & local rules
From Auckland, take the motorway south to the Bombay Hills, then follow signs to Tuakau and on to Port Waikato and Sunset Beach.
Local rules & hazards
Watch the bowl south of the top takeoff carefully — shifting wind direction can put either side of it into rotor. The site sits just inside controlled airspace (CTA/C) with a 2,500 ft height restriction.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Port Waikato, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Port Waikato with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
