Where it is
Dinosaur is a high-desert thermal and cross-country site in northeastern Utah built for experienced pilots only — P3-rated hang glider and paraglider pilots come here for big mountain-desert thermals, soaring with eagles, and cloudbase that regularly reaches 18,000 feet. On the right day, cross-country flights reach all the way to Steamboat Springs, and sunset flights are a regular treat. Altitude management matters: pilots need enough height in hand to reach the main corral landing zone, though the Snake Pit offers an easier alternate landing for paraglider pilots who come up short. Afternoon overdevelopment and thunderheads can build quickly and turn extreme, midday thermals get seriously strong, and a westerly wind component throws rotor off the ridge's complex rock formations, so pilots keep their distance from the lee side. For an easier cross-country run, following I-40 east toward Steamboat Springs is the standard line — but never land north of the Yampa River, where retrieve becomes very difficult.
Launch & conditions
Launch looks out over high-desert mountain terrain built for P3+ pilots; manage your altitude carefully to reach the Corrals landing zone, with the Snake Pit as an easier backup for paraglider pilots.
Getting there & local rules
Two route options via Dinosaur National Monument roads — from the east on the paved Harpers Corner road, or from Vernal via I-40 — both routing onto County Road 1550/1565 toward the launch.
Local rules & hazards
Afternoon overdevelopment and thunderheads can build fast and turn extreme, and midday thermals get very strong. A westerly wind component throws rotor off the ridge's rock formations, so keep clear of the lee side. This is a high-desert site best suited to experienced pilots.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Dinosaur, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Dinosaur with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
