Where it is
Pampoenfontein, tucked into the Western Cape north of Cape Town near Porterville, launches from 817 m with two separate takeoff areas — one of them a cliff launch — and a well-earned cross-country reputation: South African pilots have flown some of their longest distances here, including a site record of 173.2 km. Southwest, west and northwest sea breezes, plus southerly wind, keep the ridge working, and February and November are generally rated the most enjoyable months to fly, while December and January bring the strongest winds and the conditions serious XC and competition pilots chase. Both takeoffs are kept clear with netting laid across the ground, and an honesty box (around R35 per day) covers site access. Getting in means about 130 km of driving from Cape Town, finishing on quiet dirt roads that see little traffic — worth remembering if you need a lift out after landing, since recovery here can take patience. Landing rules shift with the farming calendar: crops rule out the fields near takeoff from May to October, but from November to March pilots can put down almost anywhere across the valley floor.
Launch & conditions
Two takeoff areas, one a cliff launch, both kept clear with netting on the ground. An honesty box (around R35/day) covers access.
Getting there & local rules
About 130 km from Cape Town via the N7 to Piketberg, then on toward Porterville and up the dirt road to Dasklip Pass. The final approach roads see little traffic, so plan for a slow recovery if you land out.
Local rules & hazards
No smoking is allowed at the site. Afternoon winds turn very strong in December and January, driven by sea breezes from the southwest and northwest, and summer afternoons run hot — often in the high 30s°C and occasionally above 50°C — so carry water and a hat, and check current conditions with local pilots before flying.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Pampoenfontein, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Pampoenfontein with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
