Where it is
Teichalm is a training and soaring hill in Austria at 1,453 m, working on south to south-west winds, beneath the summit cross of the Heulantsch. It's built for exactly that dual purpose: a wide, sloped pasture wide enough that the entire grass hillside can be used as a launch, which gives new pilots plenty of room to get a first controlled flight right, while also working as a genuine soaring ridge once you're comfortable staying up along it. Landing areas sit right at the foot of the hill, so the whole flight from take-off to touchdown stays compact and easy to read. It's the kind of site flying schools favour for exactly this reason: forgiving terrain, a big launch window, and a short, low-consequence flight from top to bottom.
Launch & conditions
The entire grass slope below the Heulantsch summit cross can be used as launch — works on south to south-west winds.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Teichalm, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Teichalm with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
