Where it is
Mona Vale is a low south-to-southeast facing sea cliff on Sydney's northern beaches, flown from a gently sloping grass and scrub area above the cliff edge — the very top of the headland is too shallow and suffers badly from compression. This is a genuinely demanding site, rated strictly for intermediate and advanced pilots, with a maximum height of 100 ft / 30 m AMSL. The cliff creates a wind gradient that hides how strong the wind really is at height: pilots often find themselves climbing into stronger air right after launch and struggling to penetrate forward. Getting blown back over the site is a serious hazard — behind the edge is sheer rock with severe rotor, and while ending up over the water is the least-bad version of that mistake, everything else about it is dangerous. Severe compression can also hit out on the point, and a single power line runs out toward the ocean pool. Don't fly when the wind sits west of south, since the beach landing then falls in the lee of the pine trees. The beach itself can be steep with limited room at high tide; top landing is workable but carries rotor risk near the footpath.
Launch & conditions
Launch from the lower grassed area just above the cliff, not the very top of the headland, which is too shallow and suffers from compression. Southerly wind tends to be gusty, with rotor off the Warriewood headland — check the ocean surface for clues before committing.
Getting there & local rules
North of Mona Vale Beach — from Pittwater Road heading south from Newport, turn onto Hillcrest Avenue or Grandview Parade; parking at the end of each street is limited.
Local rules & hazards
Strictly an intermediate/advanced site, capped at 100 ft / 30 m AMSL. The cliff hides true wind strength — expect stronger air right after launch. Never get blown over the back: it's sheer rock with severe rotor there. A single power line runs out toward the ocean pool, and severe compression can hit out on the point. Don't fly when wind sits west of south, since the beach landing then sits in the lee of the pine trees.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Mona Vale, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Mona Vale with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
