Where it is
Newport is a small, technical soaring site at the north end of its namesake Sydney beach, rated strictly for intermediate and advanced pilots. There are two launches 15 m apart — pick whichever suits the day's wind — though the hill behind can put the launch in wind shadow, so read conditions on the water first: whitecaps inside the Newport reef mean it's too strong to fly, and dark patches on the water behind Bungan Headland signal the breeze has swung too far south for safe soaring. The takeoff itself is tight, with trees close by, so solid ground handling matters before you leave the hill — watch also for a sewer vent pipe below launch and power lines along Barrenjoey Road. A 100 ft clearance is required before crossing over the road, and airspace above caps out at 2,500 ft. The beach is the only safe landing: top landing isn't recommended since trees have grown up around the site, and the football field is ruled out entirely because of power lines and rotor. Stay out of the southern bowl too — the ridge there isn't steep enough to fly, and it's genuinely hard to penetrate back out.

Getting there & local rules
North end of Newport Beach — limited parking on the ocean side of Barrenjoey Road next to the park entrance (check signage for restrictions), or metered parking in the Newport Beach car park.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Newport, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Newport with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
