Anarchist (Osoyoos)

Anarchist Mountain, above Osoyoos in British Columbia's south Okanagan Valley, is one of Western Canada's best-known soaring and cross-country sites. The 1,111 m launch faces southwest and works best when a light breeze is coming in during the day, but its real signature is the evening glass-off — extended, wide and reaching all the way across the lake. There is a house thermal to the left of launch in the bowl near the vehicle parking area, and pilots also work the north face on the right. Two rules matter before you fly: every pilot must sign a waiver at the Desert Cultural Center (nkmipdesert.com) and show current HPAC insurance, and the USA border is a short flight away — do NOT overfly it without following the correct cross-border protocol. The site is managed by SOAR (South Okanagan Air Raiders).

Launch & conditions

A small, crude grassy slope on top of a rock bluff, reached by a short but steep 150-foot hike up a 40° slope. Direction of launch is southwest. Watch for north winds arriving suddenly on days that started south or calm — they can come up fast and get rough, so keep an eye on the north end of the lake. Class E airspace sits above 9,000' ASL and above 2,200' AGL to the north; the CYR 115 White Lake Radio Telescope area northwest of Oliver is restricted — do not fly below 1,500' AGL over it.

Getting there & local rules

From Osoyoos, take Highway 3 east and turn north onto Long Joe Road (last road on the long climb east, or the first road coming down westbound). Drive 2.4 km, then take the first left north for 0.6 km. A short uphill hike leads to the grassy launch — a rugged 2WD road but generally passable. The main LZ is at 910' ASL. This is a hyper-sensitive landing area that has been secured and lost repeatedly — a landowner waiver is required, and pilots need to check the beach LZ before use (RV overflow parking in summer can eliminate it). Backup landings include hay fields before the switchback on Highway 6 east of town and, in off-season, Osoyoos Beach at the south end of the lake. Do nothing that jeopardises the community's access agreements.
