Where it is
Abtsrodaer Kuppe is the north/northeast-facing launch on the Wasserkuppe, the Rhön hill where German gliding began in the early 20th century and where countless pilots have since learned to fly. The slope offers more than 300 m of height difference and reliable thermal entry once the wind sits in the north or northeast, with an information board posted at launch. Landing is toward Dietges, and because the whole area sits inside the core zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, an off-field landing here is something to actively avoid — on busy weekends a shuttle sometimes runs between the landing field and the Wasserkuppe itself. Like every launch on the hill, paraglider and hang-glider flights are only permitted from officially designated points with a launch marshal present, and glider winch and bungee launches always have right of way over other flying here. Watch for model-aircraft activity and give trainee pilots plenty of room — the Wasserkuppe gets busy in good weather, and mixed traffic only works if everyone respects it.
Launch & conditions
Launch works in a north or northeast wind, with over 300 m of height difference to play with — check the info board at the launch point before flying. Landing is toward Dietges; avoid any off-field landing, since the area lies in the Biosphere Reserve's core zone.
Getting there & local rules
Park at the Wasserkuppe's central car park; a shuttle sometimes runs between the landing field and the Wasserkuppe on busy weekends.
Local rules & hazards
The Wasserkuppe is a special landing field where glider winch and bungee-tow launches always have priority over paragliders and hang gliders, and hang-glider/paraglider starts are only allowed from officially designated points with a launch marshal present. Motorized paragliders and hang gliders are not permitted anywhere on the site, and the surrounding core zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve rules out off-field landings.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Abtsrodaer Kuppe, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Abtsrodaer Kuppe with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
