Where it is
Arnsberg is a training and free-flying site in the Rhön, catching northwest wind on a modest hill with about 100 m of height difference — unremarkable to look at, but known for solid thermals and a wide view across the Bavarian and Hessian Rhön. It works for beginners learning the ropes and for ambitious cross-country pilots alike, though hang gliders tend to find it less suited to their needs. The site shares airspace with model aircraft, so flying zones need coordinating when both are active. Access is on foot only: park near the fire station in Oberweißenbrunn and walk the trail up to the large dry-grass launch — driving to the takeoff or landing areas isn't allowed. A power line runs northwest of the second landing field, so keep clear both horizontally and vertically. That second landing field is reserved for students who can already show at least 30 height flights elsewhere, and every pilot gets briefed on its specifics before using it.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Arnsberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Arnsberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
