Where it is

Bausenberg is a south-facing launch in the Eifel region at about 317 m, flyable only in wind from the south — southeast through south-southwest — with no flying permitted from any other direction. Site access runs through a designated club (Rhein-Mosel-Lahner or DGC), and pilots need a full German pilot license plus an on-site briefing before their first flight here; top-landing is forbidden and physically not possible. If a pilot doesn't gain height straight after launch, the rule is to head for the landing field immediately rather than try to work low ground. The whole area sits inside a nature reserve, so flying is capped at the scale set in the site's official permit, and pilots share the ground with conservation work such as mowing schedules and vehicle restrictions. The approach to landing has to stay clear of nearby houses — a minimum height of 320 m MSL is required over them — and if the landing field can't be reached safely without overflying those houses, the flight shouldn't be started at all.

Local rules & hazards

Flying is only permitted in wind from the south (southeast through south-southwest); pilots need a full pilot license and a mandatory briefing before their first flight, and top-landing is forbidden. If no height is gained after launch, pilots must head straight to the landing field, keeping at least 320 m above nearby houses on approach — a flight should not be started at all if the landing field can't be reached without overflying them. The area is a protected nature reserve, so flying stays within the scale set by the official permit and vehicles must stay on public roads.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Bausenberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Bausenberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
