Where it is
Donnersberg's lower launch is built for pilots who already know what they're doing — the site's own rules reserve it for experienced flyers with real terrain knowledge, and for good reason: the acceleration run is short, so you need a solidly strong headwind to get off safely. The northeast-facing "Bärenloch" sector sits inside a fairly narrow forest gap, which concentrates the wind but leaves little room for error, and every pilot gets briefed on local wind behaviour before a first flight. A path crosses the launch area itself, so pilots confirm it's clear before committing, and a windsock is kept mounted above the treeline to catch lee conditions early. Three nature reserves ring the site and are off-limits to overflight below 500 m. Tandem flights run here too, but under specific restrictions. It's a serious mountain launch on Rhineland-Palatinate's highest peak, not a place to learn the ropes.
Launch & conditions
The acceleration run is short, so launches need a solidly strong headwind; a path crosses the launch area itself, so pilots confirm it's clear before committing.
Getting there & local rules
This launch is reserved for experienced pilots with real terrain knowledge; every pilot is briefed on local wind behaviour before a first flight.
Local rules & hazards
Three surrounding nature reserves are off-limits to overflight below 500 m. A windsock stays mounted above the treeline to catch lee conditions early in the narrow forest gap the northeast sector launches into, and pilots keep a safe distance from a power line running near both landing areas.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Donnersberg SP 1, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Donnersberg SP 1 with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
