Estorf

Estorf is a winch-launch flatland site in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, sitting at only 30 m above sea level. Because there is no hill to launch from, pilots here get airtime behind a tow line rather than off a slope — a format many German clubs use for training and for cross-country flying out of flat terrain. The site works on southeast or northwest wind for the tow run. It sits close to several protected wetland nature reserves, including the Rehburger Moor, so the local rules are built around keeping distance from those areas rather than around the flying itself. Wind turbines are dotted around the surrounding countryside too, and pilots are expected to give them a wide berth on every flight. Ground training on hang gliders is not permitted here, and launches and landings are restricted to the areas the site actually approves — nothing improvised on neighbouring land. It is a straightforward, rule-conscious flatland site rather than a scenic mountain launch.

Local rules & hazards

Flying near several protected wetland nature reserves nearby, including the Rehburger Moor, is discouraged; where it cannot be avoided, pilots must stay at least 150 m above ground, including within a 500 m buffer around each reserve. Keep clear of the overhead power line at the southeast end of the tow strip, and keep a safe distance from the wind turbines around the site. Hang-glider ground training is not permitted, and launches and landings are limited to the approved areas only.
