Where it is

Haardskopf is a demanding German launch cut through forest, with more than 150 m of height difference between the top of the clearing and the bottom — a technical site, not a first-timer's ramp. Guest pilots need a briefing before flying here. Launch only into a headwind and watch for the lee effect of the trees; in stronger wind, that lee is clearly noticeable again at roughly half-height down the slope, coming off the opposite hillside. The landing field sits down in the Wiedtal valley, where the same lee effect needs respect too. Airspace is tight: the site caps flying at 1,300 m MSL — about 1,000 m above launch — because Cologne-Bonn airport's controlled airspace begins right above that (current as of 2020, so worth double-checking locally). Access to launch is on foot from Hochscheid, using the marked hiking trails rather than cutting across the fields, since the area is protected for wildlife; park only in the designated strips in Hochscheid or at the hiking car park on the edge of Waldbreitbach.

Launch & conditions

Launch is a forest clearing with over 150 m of height difference — don't launch in crosswind conditions, and watch the lee effect off the trees.

Getting there & local rules

Reach launch on foot from Hochscheid via the marked hiking trails, not across open fields (wildlife protection); park only in the designated strips in Hochscheid or the hiking car park at the edge of Waldbreitbach.

Local rules & hazards

In stronger wind, the lee of the opposite slope is clearly felt at roughly half-height, and the same lee effect shows up again over the landing field in the Wiedtal valley. Flying is capped at 1,300 m MSL — about 1,000 m above launch — since Cologne-Bonn airport's controlled airspace begins just above that.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Haardskopf, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Haardskopf with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
