Where it is

Höhenberg is a south-facing hill launch in Bavaria, Germany, at about 550 m, open only to members of the local hang- and paragliding club, run in coordination with model-aircraft flyers who also use the area. When more than two pilots are present at launch, a flight director has to be appointed, and that person is responsible for overseeing operations and stepping in to keep things orderly if needed — a real coordination role rather than a formality. Launching a paraglider here needs a headwind of at least 10 km/h, so lighter conditions simply aren't enough to fly. After launching, pilots are asked to avoid flying close to the hillside, a rule specifically in place to protect local bird life rather than a style preference.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Höhenberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Höhenberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
