Where it is
Hohrein is a south/southwest-facing launch in Baden-Württemberg at around 510 m, and a species-protection closure means the launch and landing are off-limits every year from 1 March through 31 July. Flying outside that window still requires prior arrangement with the landowners or tenants of the meadow, and a briefing from the site operator before a first flight. Access to both launch and landing is on foot only, and pilots share the area with walkers and other recreational users, so care is needed around them; the orchard meadows nearby must not be damaged either. Launching only works in steady, turbulence-free wind from south-southwest, around 210° — stronger crosswind or turbulent conditions rule it out. Minimum safety heights over buildings, roads and power lines apply throughout the flight, and if no lift shows up after launch, pilots are expected to head for the landing early, with enough height in hand. Crops growing around the landing field, like maize, can obstruct the approach depending on the season, so flying here may be paused while the field is being farmed.
Launch & conditions
Launch only in steady, turbulence-free south-southwest wind (around 210°) — no launching in crosswind or turbulent conditions. If you don't find lift, head for the landing early with height in hand.
Getting there & local rules
Access to launch and landing is on foot only, by prior arrangement with the landowners or tenants, with a site-operator briefing required before your first flight.
Local rules & hazards
The launch and landing are closed every year from 1 March through 31 July for species protection. Minimum safety heights over buildings, roads and power lines apply throughout the flight, and crops around the landing field can obstruct the approach, so flying may pause during the growing season.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Hohrein, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Hohrein with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
