Where it is
Königstuhl sits exposed above Heidelberg overlooking the Neckar, and it has a reputation for being genuinely tricky to fly. The launch is flat and set in a gap, so the wind needs to come from directly ahead for a safe start, and the landing approach afterward is demanding in its own right. The flight path runs out over the Neckar to a landing near the monastery. Getting up to the launch is possible by mountain road or by taking the funicular. Guest pilots can only fly here on a limited basis: flights are free of charge, but every one has to be logged in the site's online registration system beforehand, and access to that system is only granted after a thorough briefing that includes a tree-rescue course. Launching itself requires prior clearance from the site's board or someone they've authorized, tandem flights are limited to especially experienced tandem pilots, and the funicular track below the launch has to be overflown with real clearance. Weather conditions have to be good enough to guarantee reaching the landing safely before anyone launches.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Königstuhl, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Königstuhl with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
