Where it is

Ofenthaler Berg is a paragliding site near Hammelburg in Bavaria, Germany, at about 312 m, flying best in southeast wind. This site is reserved for qualified pilots — a valid cross-country rating (B-license) is required — and guest flying is only possible Monday through Thursday, since weekends and public holidays are off-limits to visitors. Every pilot needs a briefing before their first flight, covering the required safety margins from a nearby road, a railway line at the base of the slope, and the Saale river. Flying is capped at 30 days a year, and a flight log has to be kept and shown to the nature authority or the national hang-gliding federation on request. Daily flying runs from two hours after sunrise to an hour before sunset. Access to launch is on foot only — no vehicles on the hiking or forest paths — with guest parking in the designated area below the Hammelberg. For safety, pilots must turn left into the slope's lift band immediately after launching, or head straight for the landing field.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Ofenthaler Berg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
