Where it is

winchFlatland XC

Osterberg is a paragliding site in Germany at 320 m, close to the Hünsborn airfield in North Rhine-Westphalia. Pilots use the hill mainly for winch towing and flatland flying, which makes it flyable on days without strong ridge lift and popular with pilots working on airtime rather than big cross-country routes. Launch works on easterly, south-easterly, westerly and north-westerly winds, a useful spread of directions for a lowland site, though the exact line on any given day depends on the tow operation running. Because the site sits at low altitude, it's better thought of as a training and currency ground than a mountain-flying destination — good for staying sharp between bigger trips. Anyone new to the area should check in locally before flying, since the winch operation and access rules are managed on-site and change with the season.

Local rules & hazards

Launches and landings must stay at least 100 m horizontally from the adjoining Gambachtal and Wendingtal/Peimbachtal nature reserves, with 300 m of ground clearance required when overflying them — wind and launch direction need to be chosen so those distances hold through the whole flight. Flying is only permitted from two hours after sunrise until sunset, and never after 20:00. Access to launch and landing is limited to the existing tracks, and pilots must keep clear of the traffic pattern for the nearby Hünsborn airfield.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Osterberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Osterberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
