Schleppgelände Greiling is a winch-tow site on the Bad Tölz/Greiling gliding airfield south of Munich, working with north or south wind. It's a genuinely shared airfield — gliders share the pattern with hang gliders and a couple of paragliders on a typical busy weekend, so different circuit patterns apply depending on what you're flying, and it pays to know which one is yours before you commit to towing. The winch crew and launch directors know hang gliders inside out and are happy to talk uncertain pilots through what to expect. At roughly 900 m of tow strip, release heights here are genuinely decent, and the Alpine panorama makes the climb worth it on its own. Electric-powered wings and light ultralights share the airspace too, capped at five airborne at once, and each needs the flight director's go-ahead before launching — worth knowing if you're flying alongside them.

Launch & conditions

North or south-facing winch-tow launch on a shared gliding airfield; about 900 m of tow strip gives genuinely decent release heights.

Getting there & local rules

This is a mixed-traffic airfield — gliders, hang gliders and paragliders share it, each flying its own circuit pattern, so know which one applies to you before towing.

Local rules & hazards

Electric-powered wings and light ultralights also fly here, capped at five airborne simultaneously, each needing the flight director's consent before launching. Pilots holding a tow rating from before 2003 need a B-license.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Schleppgelände Greiling, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Schleppgelände Greiling with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
