Where it is
Sehlem is a training slope for basic paragliding instruction in Germany, at a gentle 205 m with a launch open to north, west and northwest winds — the kind of low-altitude, straightforward hill schools use for a student's first solo flights. Because it sits close to protected woodland, flying here comes with real conservation obligations: pilots must respect nature-protection concerns generally, follow the species-protection rules under Germany's Federal Nature Conservation Act, and during the breeding season from early March to the end of August, avoid overflying the protected woodland parcel next to the site so nesting birds aren't disturbed. None of that changes how the hill flies day to day, but it does mean giving that patch of trees a wide berth for most of the flying season. The modest height keeps flights short, which suits its role as a place to build confidence before moving to bigger terrain.
Local rules & hazards
Respect general nature-conservation concerns and Germany's species-protection rules (§44 Federal Nature Conservation Act). During the breeding season, early March to end of August, do not overfly the protected woodland parcel next to the site.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Sehlem, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Sehlem with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
