Where it is

Stettberg is a small practice and soaring hill in Bavaria at about 502 m, with roughly 50 m of height difference, flown in a southwest wind. It's built for pilots working on basic skills and ridge soaring on their own rather than for organized flight-school courses — commercial training operations are explicitly not permitted here. The hill shares its slope with grazing sheep and is used by walkers, dog owners and riders, so flying is expected to give way to all of them and to leave the grass turf undamaged. A power line runs close to the landing field, and the site holder briefs pilots on it before they fly, with a clear expectation of keeping well clear. Every pilot flying here is expected to know and follow the site's specific conditions before launching. A low-key local hill for casual practice and soaring, shared with farm animals and the public rather than reserved for flying alone.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Stettberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Stettberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
