Where it is
Urenschwang is a northeast-facing hill in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at about 720 m, on the slope of a former ski hill. It isn't a strong thermal producer, but in the right weather it works well for soaring and practice flying rather than cross-country chasing. Flying here only happens with prior arrangement with the site operator, so it's not an open drop-in hill — pilots need to coordinate access before showing up. Flight operations are restricted to daytime hours between 09:00 and 17:00, and only two groups are permitted to launch: students and instructors of the local flying school running training there, and pilots who are locals to the area. Beyond those specific rules, the site follows a set of municipal conditions the town first laid down in 1999, which still governs how the hill can be used today.
Launch & conditions
Northeast-facing hill launch. Flight operations only happen with prior arrangement with the site operator, and only between 09:00 and 17:00.
Local rules & hazards
Only the local flying school's own training operations and local pilots are permitted to launch here — it is not open to visiting pilots generally. Long-standing municipal conditions set by the town also govern use of the site.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Urenschwang, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Urenschwang with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
