Where it is
Urphar sits above a bend in the Main river in Baden-Württemberg, a thermally active site that's genuinely good in north and northwest wind, with real potential for cross-country flights. The catch is the local air: wind in the Main valley near the landing field can shift around in patches, so pilots need to stay alert on approach rather than assume steady conditions. Top-landing back at the launch is banned outright, and parking is limited to the designated areas only. This isn't a drop-in site either — flying requires prior arrangement with the site holder, and every pilot needs a briefing on the local conditions before their first flight here, covering the specific launch, flight and landing situation along the Main. Head for the landing field early and with plenty of altitude in hand, and keep at least 50 m of horizontal and vertical distance from the road throughout.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Urphar, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Urphar with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
