Where it is
Walchzell is a mixed-use flying site shared with foot-launchable ultralight aircraft (both electric and combustion-powered), taking wind from east, southeast, west and northwest at about 459 m. It operates under a shared agreement between the neighbouring Gammelsdorf gliding site and the local hang-glider/paraglider group, which sets the rules both sides follow. Flying can only start an hour after sunrise at the earliest, and has to stop an hour before sunset at the latest. Two parcels bordering the northwest of the site, in the Obersüßbach district, are off-limits to flying altogether. If you're landing in the western part of the site, keep 50 m of horizontal and vertical clearance from the road; launches can happen with less clearance than that, but pilots still need to keep a genuinely safe distance. Every pilot needs a briefing from the site holder on the specifics and flight rules before flying, and training flights aren't permitted here.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Walchzell, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Walchzell with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
