Where it is

ThermalsCross-country

Jas d'Oris launches at 1,696 m in the French Alps near La Mure, and it has a reputation among local pilots for genuinely excellent cross-country flying in south or southwest wind, running north toward a deep valley and eventual transition to Chamrousse. Thermals here typically climb higher than at the nearby Chamrousse or Courtet sites — but they come stronger too, so this rewards pilots who are comfortable working real mountain air rather than casual thermalling. The takeoff is a shield-shaped grass slope reached via a mountain track from Oris-en-Ratier toward the Coirot summit, stopping at the last bend before an old shepherd's hut. The access road is gravel and closed through winter, generally from around mid-November to 15 April, so this is very much a warm-season site. The landing field sits beside the D114a road between Oris-en-Ratier and La Valette; expect real turbulence close to the ground in the valley on the way in, so keep some margin for the approach.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is a shield-shaped grass mountain slope. From Oris-en-Ratier, follow the mountain track toward the Coirot summit and stop at the last bend, just before the old shepherd's hut.

Getting there & local rules

From La Mure, take the D26 to Sièvoz, then the D114a toward Oris-en-Ratier. The gravel access road is closed through winter, roughly mid-November to 15 April, so plan for the warmer months.

Local rules & hazards

Conditions here are genuinely strong mountain air — thermals typically climb higher than at nearby Chamrousse or Courtet, but stronger too, so this favors pilots already comfortable in rough mountain thermals. Expect real turbulence close to the ground in the valley on the approach to landing.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Jas d'oris, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Jas d'oris with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
