Beinn na Feusaige

Beinn na Feusaige rises on the north side of Glen Carron in the north-west Highlands, a 30 km valley running from Achnasheen towards the west-coast village of Lochcarron. In its upper parts the valley is wide and the hills round out at 500–660 m; heading west, the glen narrows through plantation forestry before opening up again past Achnashellach. The north side flies best in a light southerly, and while a run across the Coulin Forest towards Loch Maree and the Torridon peaks is a solid XC objective, Beinn na Feusaige also gives an easy roadside gain when conditions are right.

Launch & conditions

From the parking spot at the head of Loch Sgamhaim, cross the road and pick the most direct line through rough boggy ground; then head straight up the hillside until high enough to launch.

Getting there & local rules

From the A835 (Tore to Ullapool road), turn left onto the A832 just after the village of Garve. Where the A832 splits at Achnasheen, take the A890 for 8 km and park just off the road at the head of Loch Sgamhaim — limited parking beneath Beinn na Feusaige. Landing is possible anywhere on the valley floor — watch out for the visible electricity cables.

Local rules & hazards

Glen Carron is in the Highland Restricted Area (HRA) — midweek flying is subject to strict airspace restrictions. Achnasheen sits mid-Scotland, open to sea breezes from either coast — conditions can be hard to predict, and the Loch Glasscarnoch weather station just to the north is not a reliable indicator of Glen Carron conditions.
