Where it is
Little Wyvis is a Highland Scottish site, a gentler neighbour to the more dramatic Ben Wyvis. Its 695 m launch works on SW, W and NW flow, with a wide expanse of west-facing slope and two adjacent tops — Tom na Caillich (705 m) and the main 763 m summit. The gentler terrain and lower altitude make Little Wyvis less intimidating than its neighbours and sometimes flyable when the surrounding mountains are not. A network of Landrover tracks reaches most of the flyable area, and cross-country is a real option. Landing is easy either low on the slopes or, with height above take-off, on the meadows beside the Black Water River.
Launch & conditions
From the car park, cross the Blackwater River and the main road to a steep entrance to the wide track. The track passes an estate storage depot on the left. Continue up to the Stalkers Cabin above and stop there before going onto the hill — permission from estate staff at the cabin is required before flying. Once cleared, follow the main Landrover track that works up the hill.
Getting there & local rules
Little Wyvis is most easily accessed from the large public car park at the Blackwater Gorge, 3 miles north of Garve on the A835 (Tore to Ullapool road). From there it is a short walk to the estate track and up to the Stalkers Cabin before continuing to launch.
Local rules & hazards
Little Wyvis lies inside the Highland Restricted Area; midweek flying is subject to strict restrictions that pilots must review before travelling. Watch for the wind moving too far south — conditions can turn rough quickly — and for a sea breeze pushing in from behind the hill.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Little Wyvis, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Little Wyvis with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
