Where it is
Monte Subasio rises above Assisi in Umbria, and this west-facing launch is one of several take-off points strung along its broad ridge. Pilots favor it for calm evening soaring sessions, when the day's thermals ease off and the ridge lift stays smooth and predictable. A top landing is possible right at launch, which makes short local flights easy to plan around, though most pilots use the official landing field south of San Vitale instead. Cross-country routes west toward Bastia Umbra are closed off by controlled airspace around Assisi and Perugia, so flights here tend to stay local rather than reaching out across the valley. The main access road climbs from Spello or Assisi and turns to gravel near the summit, but stays drivable for most cars, and shuttle services also run up to the launch on busier days. Assisi itself, just below, is worth a stop before or after flying.
Launch & conditions
Launch faces west, with room for gentle evening soaring in light thermic conditions; a top landing back at launch is realistic when the air is calm.
Getting there & local rules
Reach the site by car via Spello or Assisi; the final stretch of road turns to gravel near the summit but stays passable, and shuttle transport up the mountain is also available.
Local rules & hazards
Airspace to the west toward Bastia Umbra is closed by the Assisi–Perugia CTR, so cross-country flights in that direction aren't possible; check current conditions with the local club before launching, and expect turbulence when the wind comes from the east.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monte Subasio Startplatz 3, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Monte Subasio Startplatz 3 with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
