Where it is

San Vito Lo Capo is a coastal launch on the northwest tip of Sicily, close to the beach town of the same name, at 643 m facing northeast and east. It's a walk-in site: the approach follows a gravel track from the west, then a stretch on a paved road near a bridge where pilots climb over a fence to reach the take-off. Livestock sometimes wander near the start of the path, so it's worth keeping an eye out. The launch itself has two distinct sides — the western part has a few thistles scattered through the grass, while the eastern side launches from tall grass and is notably one of the few spots here without thorny scrub mixed in, making it a more comfortable place to lay out a wing. Landing is at the designated San Vito Lo Capo field. With its position right above one of Sicily's best-known beach towns, it's a scenic coastal option for pilots visiting the area.

Launch & conditions

Two sides to the launch: west has scattered thistles in the grass, east launches from tall grass with none of the thorny scrub found elsewhere here — the more comfortable spot to lay out.

Getting there & local rules

On foot via a gravel track from the west, then a stretch on paved road near a bridge where you climb over a fence to reach the launch. Livestock sometimes graze near the start of the path.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to San Vito Lo Capo, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open San Vito Lo Capo with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
