Where it is

Pizzi Deneri sits on Mount Etna in Sicily at 2,835 m, launching from a flat, round summit that opens up virtually every wind direction — genuinely rare for a mountain top. Conditions are often very windy, and locals say it's actually better with a bit of snow still on the ground. No guide or permit is required to fly from Pizzi Deneri itself, and it sits in a zone considered safe even during a minor eruption of the volcano — though heading higher onto the main volcanic cone is a different matter and does require a guide. Most pilots start the hike up from Rifugio Citelli, where it's possible to stay the night before making the climb. There's no official landing zone; the closest realistic option is the beach on the coast, reached by a long descent off the mountain, so this is a flight that needs real height and a real plan rather than a short local hop.

Getting there & local rules

Most hikes up start from Rifugio Citelli, where it's possible to stay overnight before the climb. There's no official landing zone — the nearest realistic option is a beach on the coast, a long descent from the summit.

Local rules & hazards

No guide or permission is formally required to fly Pizzi Deneri, and it's considered a safe area even during a minor eruption of the volcano — but going higher onto the main volcanic cone is different and does require a guide.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Pizzi Deneri, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
