Where it is

ThermalsSoaring

Cefalù launches from 472 m above the Sicilian coast near the town of the same name, with a takeoff that starts flat before a short run down to a gentle slope — an approachable ramp rather than a technical one. Flyable directions cover north, north-east and north-west, catching the coastal airflow off the Tyrrhenian Sea and making the site workable for both thermal and soaring flying depending on the day's conditions. Reaching launch means following the SP54 bis road into the valley south of Cefalù, then turning right at the junction with the SP136 and continuing along a narrow road that curves back toward the north-north-west — a route worth having mapped out in advance, since the roads aren't the most intuitive on a first visit. Landing is refreshingly relaxed: pilots come down on the public beach itself or on the parking lot right beside it, putting you a short walk from the town after a coastal flight.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Cefalù, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Cefalù with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
