Where it is

Soaring

Capo Milazzo launches from the Baronia area of the Milazzo headland on Sicily's north coast, a low coastal site at 47 m best suited to soaring the sea cliffs rather than mountain-style thermal flying. The approach follows the road from Milazzo toward the old castle and continues out along the point to the take-off. Wind from the west and north-west powers the ridge lift along the cliff line, and pilots can either top-land back at the site or extend the flight by ridge-soaring on to Tono's Beach for a coastal landing instead. Strong wind from the west or north-west is the condition to watch: what generates good lift in moderate strength turns rough and unmanageable once it builds, so this is a site for judging wind strength carefully rather than just direction. As a compact, sea-level site with direct access from town, Capo Milazzo works well as a short coastal soaring session, and the option of two landing points (top or beach) gives some flexibility depending on how far along the ridge the flight develops.

Launch & conditions

Coastal ridge launch at 47 m in the Baronia area of the Milazzo headland; faces west and north-west.

Getting there & local rules

From Milazzo, follow the road toward the castle and continue out along the headland to the take-off.

Local rules & hazards

Avoid flying in strong west or north-west wind — moderate strength gives good ridge lift, but it becomes rough and unmanageable once it builds.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Capo Milazzo, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Capo Milazzo with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
