Zojiro

Zojiro is a hidden gem in western Kyushu, tucked into the Central Kyushu Mountains near the Mimi River. The launch sits at 645 m, opens on E through SW winds, and looks out over dissected high-relief terrain that rewards pilots who can read the sky. Straightforward flights from take-off to the LZ are only the beginning — the real potential is in linking valleys and working lift above surrounding ridges, using a mix of sea breeze, valley wind and prevailing westerlies that layer differently at every altitude. This is excellent training for cross-country in bigger mountains elsewhere in the world. Access is easy for a Kyushu backwater — 20 minutes from the LZ on mostly paved road, with room to lay out half a dozen gliders and forgiving top-landings. A local club led by instructor Nakajima-san flies here every good weekend.

Launch & conditions

Take-off is a spacious clearing 645 m up Mt. Zojiro. Top-landings are easy. Hazards are mostly the ones you expect in mountain flying — valley winds, rotors, venturis — but the biggest specific risk here is invisible: the local wind pattern is complex and hard to visualise, so venturing far from the take-off can drop you into sink with few landing options before you notice.

Getting there & local rules

The site is in a back corner of Kyushu — the closest sizeable town is Nobeoka, about 45 minutes' drive east on the Pacific coast. From Fukuoka, allow 4 to 5 hours by car. The LZ is directly under take-off at 70 m on a terraced bank of the Mimi River — a little narrow, but approaches are clean and wind is usually stable. Coming from outside Kyushu, this is a trip you plan in advance.
